Orban called “European Chavez” & fiercely protested in European Parliament

Hugo Chavez….ooops…we mean Viktor Orban is having a pretty rough go at the EU Presidency – and it genuinely seems to be taking him by surprise.

Please read the whole article on Spiegel Online for a detailed account of what happened.  Here’s a taste:  just as Orban began speaking in what he had hoped would be his warm welcome as President of the EU:

  1. he was interrupted by the European Parliament president
  2. members of the European Parliament taped their mouths shut and held up signs crying out against Hungarian media censorship (see below)
  3. stunned, Orban said, “I feel at home.” Perhaps he had a hard childhood…
