Too Good To Be True?: Hungary May Reconsider Media Law

In Uncategorized on January 6, 2011 at 4:33 pm

The Associated Press reports that Hungary is willing to modify its new media law, but only if other EU nations make similar changes.

As much as we would like this to be true, we can’t help but believe that this is a ridiculous claim made by Viktor Orban.  What other country goes as far as Hungary’s New Media Law does?  “‘This Hungarian law is a patchwork of the worst practices in Europe,’ said Eva Simon, head of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union’s free speech program.”

“The Socialist Party, Hungary’s biggest opposition group (and the party last in charge), said Thursday that it would ask the Constitutional Court to strike down the whole media law because the legislation is so flawed that it could not be amended.”  Good luck.

Hungary Willing to Consider Changes to Media Law, by Pablo Gorondi in the Associated Press.

Alright, we admit it: we're a little skeptical!
